28/08/2009

The 27th Brazil-Germany Economic Meeting and the 36th Meeting of the Brazil-Germany Joint Commission will be held in Vitória, in the state of Espírito Santo, on August 31 and September 1, 2009.

The Governor of Espírito Santo, Paulo Hartung, accompanied by high officials, will open the Economic Meeting on Monday, August 31, with the Minister of Economics and Technology of Germany and the President of the Federation of German Industries (BDI).

The closing ceremony of the meeting, on September 1, will be attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The main theme of the meeting will be "growth and employment". Businesspeople and governmental representatives will discuss the following issues: a) enhancement of bilateral economic cooperation; b) outlooks for the Brazilian energy market (for fossil and renewable energy); c) infrastructure investment opportunities in Brazil; and d) preparation for the 2014 World Cup, with particular emphasis on logistics and infrastructure.
The 36th Meeting of the Brazil-Germany Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation will be held on September 1. The Brazilian and the German governmental delegations will be respectively headed by the Secretary General of External Relations, Ambassador Samuel Pinheiro Guimarães, and by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Economics and Technology, Bernd Pfaffenbach. Opportunities to expand economic and trade relations between the two countries will be discussed.

Germany is the sixth largest investor in Brazil, with a volume over US$17 billion. Brazil is Germany's largest economic partner in Latin America. The German market is the fifth destination for Brazilian exports (US$8.85 billion - FOB). Trade between Brazil and Germany has doubled in the last four years, surpassing US$20.87 billion in 2008.

Brazil-UK trade on upward curve

23 September 2010

A High-Level Economic Dialogue meeting took place in Brasília on 21 September between Brazilian and British delegations led, respectively, by Ambassador Pedro Luiz Carneiro de Mendonça, Under-Secretary General for Economics and Technological Affairs in the Brazilian foreign ministry, and Nick Baird, Director General for Europe and Globalization at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The Economic Dialogue meetings are an initiative dating back to President Lula's state visit to the UK in 2006, and have taken place annually since then. Their purpose is to further strengthen UK-Brazil economic and financial relations both in a bilateral and multilateral context.

The current trend is certainly positive, with Brazil having increased its total exports to the UK between January and August this year ($2.78bn) by 18% in relation to the same period in 2009. Exports of aircraft and sugar made a significant contribution to the overall increase. British exports to Brazil ($2.03bn), meanwhile, rose by an impressive 67%, with cars and steel tubes accounting for much of the increase.

The issues discussed at the Economic Dialogue meeting included the G20, the reform of international financial institutions, financial regulation, the Doha Round of world trade negotiations, EU-Mercosur trade, and the Millennium Development Goals.
